Route: Missed the Kane, ended up just going for it
Route possibilities abound on Mist Mountain. We (Spencer Madden of MountainObsession.com and I) attempted to follow the Kane route up but found absolutely no trace of the game trail mentioned in his book near the Lost Lemon Mine sign on highway 40. Our GPS shows our bushwhack bearing towards where the trail should have been and, being eager energetic scramblers, where we decided to ascend the very first slope we came to. This route ended up working extremely well and led us pretty much directly to the summit ridge with some fun hands-on scrambling along the way.
Once at the Mist Mountain Summit ridge we expected a quick plod to the summit. Not so! The ridge is extremely long and the terrain is such that ground is covered slowly and tediously. By the time we made it to the true summit (after endless celebrations at false summits in the clouds) it was 8:30pm and our plans to descend to Lipsett col to bag Lipsett on the descent were dashed.
After pics we quickly retraced the summit ridge back down but the descending scree trails hither and yon made choosing a reasonably fast and sure line back to the tree line impossible. Fortunately Spencer chose a good gully to descend that, after some down climbing and traversing, just happened to lead us right onto the slope that the Kane route is on. A lucky win since it became pitch black pretty much the minute we stepped off the rocks. After another hour or so of crashing through the bush by headlamps we made it to the highway (just after 11pm) and victory was ours.
