Location: Banff National Park
Trip Dates: Oct 5, 2015 & Oct 8, 2015
Trip time: 6 hours
Distance: 14.5 kms
Elevation Gain: 1,700m
Route: Non official
Difficulty: Moderate if you bypass the first rock face & ridge crux at the pinnacles, difficult if you tackle the ridge directly.
The Mount Ishbel scramble route is a blast, one of the best in Banff National Park. The fun terrain, magnificent views & lack of approach trail all add to the allure of this trip.
On the initial solo trip the first rock face was fun to tackle head on but it seemed wiser to bypass the pinnacle crux on ascent. On descent both the ridge crux pinnacles & first rock face were an interesting, direct and exciting way to get down. Ishbel still deserves a difficult rating and serious respect but it’s hardest parts are easier than Mount Fox, Crandell or Smuts for a comparison.
